"Fête Votive" Annual Celebration

Horaires :
Usually held in late July/early August.
For 6 days in the middle of the summer season, city life follows the rhythm of its traditional Fête Votive celebration. Under the initiative of the Municipality and Saint-Martin associations, ancient traditions come alive in the flow of entertainment and street performances: contests (games of "boules" or cards, fishing, etc.), clay pigeon shooting, night-time cycling races, bullfighting events, dance balls, fun fair, festive meals, etc.

Some events should definitely not be missed by the large number of regulars and tourists.

First comes the "sardinade" dinner offered by the Municipality on Friday night, always attended by hundreds of guests. Accompanied by the sounds of grand ball music, conversations easily give way to dancing, and the good time continues late into the night….

There are also bull runs or "encierros" – the traditional release of bulls in the streets. Finding a good place on the sidewalks to watch often involves elbowing your way in! Spectators are protected by iron fences through which the animals cannot pass, but which allow the more daring among them to slip through and get close to the animals... What follows is a frantic race between a tremendous number of daredevils and the bulls, who rule the city streets for the entire duration of the event.

Over the years, a spectacular "abrivado" has been also organized. This is a game in which one or several bulls must complete a specific route, accompanied by horses. There is just one challenge for the cowboys, but making sure that no bull can escape is definitely not an easy one!

Sometimes the Votive Festival programme also includes a "bull-catchers" contest. One level higher on the daredevil scale than the "encierro", it requires the participants to catch bulls running at full speed through the city streets, with only their bare hands.

Throughout the festival, a large funfair offers numerous attractions and treats to the delight of young and old alike.

And each year, the festivities culminate in the concluding torchlight procession and fireworks, eagerly anticipated by everyone!
